You are Beautiful: Nicci R.

Everyone has their own definition of beauty, but personal definitions can change over time. Talking to Nicci really opened my eyes to see that life can change a person in more good ways than one. Nicci is an inspiration to us all, spreading a great reminder that just because some experiences can get us down, doesn’t mean we should give up on ourselves. The beauty we have to offer the world goes beyond a thin and well put together body.

Maggie: In our teenage and early adulthood years, we develop our own definition of beauty based on our experiences, what we see from day to day, etc. What definition did you develop earlier in life that has stuck with you through the years?

Nicci: All you ever see is magazine models and actresses that never seem to have a single hair out of place. Their clothes are perfect, their nails are done, they have the perfect figure. [I thought] that you had to be thin and very put together to be pretty.

M: As you grew into the woman you are today, did you start to see things differently? Were there any experiences that changed your perception of life and beauty?

N: I have been through things that most people wouldn’t dream of, and I’ve gone through most of it on my own. I had to be strong.

I raised my siblings and experienced a lot of neglect as a child. I then went through an abusive relationship and started to realize I was worth more than that. I did, thankfully, meet the most amazing man afterward, and he treats me great. But, the five years of fertility medications, losing a baby, and gaining 120 lbs was difficult.

After learning I had PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), I’m finally learning to like myself again and make good choices for myself. I know I wouldn’t be me if I hadn’t gone through those experiences.

M: Since learning how to like yourself and make good choices, have you felt more beautiful? Do you have a better sense of confidence and strength now that you’ve overcome so much?

N: I haven’t always loved myself, and I think it depends on the day. Some days I feel more beautiful than others. I used to never like what I saw in the mirror, but slowly, I’m starting to learn to love all my imperfections.

M: A lot of women feel just like you do. Are there any words of wisdom you can share with women out there that struggle with their definition of beauty? Is there anything that you think would help them think more positively?

N: I think I would say that everyone has something to give that no one else can share with the world. Each of us has the power to change a little piece of the world, whether it be with our smile, our heart, or our laugh. [Knowing and practicing that] is true beauty.

M: You’ve come a long way from your original definition of beauty; how does being who you are today empower you? And how can it potentially empower others?

N: I think because I’ve been through so much at one time, [it’s made me stronger]. I thought [at the time], it would break me. But now, I use my story to help others through their journey.

“A woman who feels beautiful is beautiful. You can see it in the way that she carries herself, the way that she walks, the way that she talks…” Nicci is absolutely right. Embrace and see your own beauty. Allow yourself to feel beautiful, and the rest will fall into place.

UPDATE: Since her session, Nicci has continued on her journey and has lost another 40lbs. As of last week, she hit a total weight loss of 100lbs.!!! For any woman, this is an amazing accomplishment. For those of us that suffer from PCOS, understand how astonishing her success is!!!
