You Are Beautiful Dena R's Self Power

You Are Beautiful: Dena R.'s Self Power

How growing up as a loner fueled Dena’s self power

Let’s face it, we all have struggles growing up that carry over into adulthood. Talking to Dena was a reminder that sometimes life is just about getting up, heading out, and doing the best you can. If you put in the work daily, even though it might not feel like it, I promise you it counts.

Maggie: I really believe that what impacts us in our youth carries over into adulthood. What do you think impacted you as a youth when it comes to beauty?

Dena: I grew up in a town where I didn’t feel like I ever fit in. It was a very cliquish town and I did not fit in with the style, financial status, and the glam. I did not have many friends and I was a loner...but [it taught me] my own self power and inner beauty.

M: How exactly did it teach you your own self power? Can you tell me a specific story?

D: I grew up with an angry, very strict mother that shared ZERO love and affection towards me. It forced me into learning things the hardest way when I was younger. I’ve been at the depths of low and have always taught myself to crawl out and rise above. I’m not a mother, homeowner, business owner, and surrounded by a great community.

M: Do you have any words of wisdom based on these experiences that you would like to share with others who are struggling?

D: Show up daily and always do your very best. What matters is what is inside your soul, your passions, and the way you see the world through your eyes.

M: How do you define beauty?

D: If your soul, passions, and the way you see the world is true, raw, and honest your beauty will shine.

M: Why did you want to be a part of this campaign?

D: I need daily reminders of why I get up. Even with the many blessings in my life, depression is still inside me. Growing up, I had no lessons or words about taking care or appreciating my body in anyway and I still find myself feeling unattractive sometimes.
