Through my mission to empower women by creating artistic portraits showcasing their true essence, while reminding them how strong, beautiful, and extraordinary they are I have met some amazing women...and June B. is no exception. Keep reading for our conversation on staying grounded, coparenting, and what it means for her to turn 50.
Maggie: What things have most affected you and the way you look at the world?
June: Married my high school sweetheart, made two gorgeous kids, divorced and been single since 2000. I didn't worry about failing at keeping a roof over our heads because it just wasn't an option. We co-parented better than most and are on very friendly terms today. Found my calling in my work looking to make more money for us & enjoy it so much I help train new staff. Started Camp Gladiator March 2018 & met an incredible group of people that helps keep me grounded & focused, who push me when I need it & laugh with me while doing it. Became a Nonna shortly after. My life is simple, full & all mine.
M: What is your favorite NON physical feature about yourself?
J: [I am] fierce in my independence.
M: What is your definition of beauty?
J: Beauty is a quiet underrated power. It's the perfect bite of steak, a smooth shade of lipstick, music in the background of a night drive at midnight, the smile across a dinner table, deep and full and genuine.
M: What impacted you the most about beauty when you were younger that you’ve carried with you into adulthood (positive or negative)?
J: I think I was about 8 or 9 and I needed my hair braided. My mom said I was old enough to do it myself so I did. That's when I learned I was responsible for my own look and I could do what I wanted to.
M: Based on your personal experience, what words of wisdom would you like to share with others who struggle to see their own beauty?
J: The beauty you see in others is a reflection of yourself in their eyes.
M: How does being the woman you are today make you uniquely powerful?
J: I am the master of my universe, my queendom if you will. I can decide everything and anything.
M: What made you want to do this session? Why are beautiful photos important for you right now?
J: My 50th birthday is in June. I've never had professional photos done and thought it might be nice to have some. To see how a professional sees my potential and brings it forward.
